   In 1997 Naomi Campbell received blood diamonds (they were also raw, uncut and unpolished) after attending a dinner hosted by Nelson Mandela — she didn’t know who they were from at the time but they are now believed to be from Liberian President Charles Taylor.

   After receiving the diamonds she gave them to her friend Jeremy Ratcliffe (a trustee of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund) to auction for the charity. Apparently he never did and so he could face charges of possession of unpolished diamonds. (He and the Fund are denying ever being given the diamonds).

   This is all being used as part of the evidence against Taylor as he is tried (by a UN-backed court) for war crimes.

   “Taylor is charged with five counts of crimes against humanity, including murder, sexual slavery and violence, and enslavement. He also faces five counts of war crimes, including acts of terrorism and torture, and one count of other serious violations of international humanitarian law.”
